The “essential oils” in spices are responsible for aroma and most of the flavor in spices. Over time those oils evaporate and spices lose their flavor.
Because whole spices have less surface area, they hold their oils much longer than ground spices. Many of our customers buy whole spices and prefer to grind them at home. Because our spices are shipped in on a weekly basis from around the world, you can take great comfort in purchasing our them. We grind most of our spices in house and you won’t be getting a product that has been sitting on a supermarket shelf for a year.
Spices should be stored in an airtight container, in a dry, dark and cool place.
Due to the fact that heat and light cause the oils in spices to evaporate, you should never store spices next to windows, dishwashers, refrigerators or ovens. It may be convenient but it can wreak havoc on your spices.
Recommended Shelf Life: Whole spices----2 to 3 years
Ground spices---6 months to 1 year
