Mastic Gum is a resin obtained from the mastic tree of Greece. It grows only on the south side of the island of Chios. The tree is scored and small "tears" drop from the branches which is where the name "Tears of Chios" comes from. This is a very high quality, authentic mastic, beware of imitations that come from pine or almond trees. Always purchase your mastic in whole form and grind it yourself, pre-ground mastic almost always contains maltodextrin or some type of filler. When purchased in whole form you will also be able to tell if its genuine by its translucent yellowish tint.
