  • ag Green Colombian Excelso Whole Bean 16oz

    Price: $8.99

This is a grade A Colombian coffee that is still in its green unroasted form. Some of our customer like to take "coffee freshness" to a whole new level. There are many ways to roast at home including, but not limited to, stovetop popcorn roasters, rotating BBQ roasters, stovetop pan roasting and gas or convection ovens.

If roasting on the stovetop, you can use a cast iron skillet or a heavy frying pan. Be sure to use a pan that hasn't absorbed any flavors from foods you previously cooked in them as these flavors will transfer to the coffee. 1. Start by preheating the pan to around 450° F. Depending on the size of your pan you should then add 8-10 ounces of coffee. You will then place some type of lid to cover the pan and trap the heat. You want to constantly shake the pan around so that an even roast is achieved. You should shake the pan at least every 20 seconds to ensure even roasting. 2. After 4-7 minutes you should hear the first "crack" or "pop" at which point you will keep agitating the beans and checking on the color every minute or so until the desired roast has been achieved. When the desired roast has been achieved put the beans in a metal bowl and put them in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or so, which will prevent the beans from over roasting due to carry over heat. The skins of the coffee can then be removed by shaking the roasted beans over the sink and blowing on them causing the skins to escape the bowl.

Oven Roasting: When roasting in the oven you want to start by preheating your oven between 500°F and 550°F. Take your green coffee and place it in a flat baking sheet. We recommend no more than 16oz of green coffee per sheet because there will be little airflow and you will have uneven roasting if more is added. Roast the coffee in the oven for about 20-25 minutes or until desired color is reached. Be sure to mix the coffee around every 5 minutes or so to create an even roasting. Roasting times will vary and you will have to make a few batches before you know exactly how long and at what temperature you will need to use.
