Mahlab Spice - Ground
Mahlab, also known as Mahlepi in Greece, is the seed of the St. Lucie Cherry. Its widely used in the Middle East in cookies, breads and cheeses. It has a very distinct and pungent aroma so a little goes a long way. In Middle Eastern cooking it is used in deserts like kaak, which is a soft cookie made flavored anise, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and mahlab. Its also the spice used to flavor sesame bread sticks, which are also called kaak, but are more like a biscotti.
